Diabetic Eye Care
Diabetes is the highest cause of blindness of people under 65 years of age.
Once you are diabetic for 20 years, there is a 75% chance that you will have some diabetic retinopathy/maculopathy. Prevention is better than cure so the best way to prevent any vision loss from diabetes is to maintain very tight control of your blood glucose levels.
We detect diabetic retinopathy using digital retinal photography and OCT scans.
Should you progress to diabetic retinopathy that needs treatment, we will send you to a retinal ophthalmologist. Treatment options include injections into the eye to decrease swelling of the macula as well as laser treatment and sometimes surgery.
Diabetics need to have annual eye exams.
